Everyone Needs An Oma Every Once in a While

This morning I was walking around the neighborhood with my baby girl. We were hunting bee’s and taking pictures of flowers. If you follow me on Instagram you have seen all that we find.

This morning we were on the side of a quiet street looking at a patch of wild flowers. Suddenly an old woman approached us on her bike. At first glance I thought we might be blocking her way with our stroller. I attempted to make more space.

She got off of her bike and said “Darf ich Ihnen was zeigen, beziehungsweise mit ihrem kleinen kind?” That means can I show you something in relation to your child?

Honestly I first thought she was going to explain to me why my child needed a hat on this sunny spring day. I said sure. She proceeded to show me how you can take the petals of poppies and make them pop. She called it a Blasemohn, or bubble poppy. I said wow! I never knew you could do that. She said not many do, that is why we all need an Oma once in a while.

Oma is the word for Grandma.

I said that is so true and neither one of our Grandma’s live here. She said I know dear, that is why I stopped to show you. I once had a chance to go to Bayern and I showed my grandchildren and their friends in Kindergarten. No one there knew how.

She said what you are doing with your child is important. You are helping her get acquainted with the world. My husband died in February. He also went out everyday and took pictures of the flowers. Then he would come home and look them up and read all about them.

He died and he never gave his pictures away. Not a single one. Her eyes were full of tears and I could tell she was remembering him with so much love!

I told her I was sorry to hear of his death, and the pain she was experiencing. I also thanked her for taking time to share with us and to talk to us. She said of course and got back on her bike and rode away.

I was so encouraged by this exchange. I hope she was too.

Then we came back to our house and bumped into the old lady that lives downstairs. She asked what we were up to. When I told her she asked if I knew where the strawberry field was.

I didn’t.

She told me where it was and said in about 2 weeks you guys can go and pick strawberries together too!

Gotta love an Oma!
